i can't say it mattered to me as a teen what the book cover actually looked like, but unfortunately, since i had so little knowledge of literature at the time and so little knowledge and understanding of difference, i didn't necessarily consider alternative type narratives... i often focused on the writers i already knew and read more by those writers... and by high school, we are already taught the "canon" (at least in my high school), so there was capital behind reading more books by hemingway or dickens vs. say someone like perkins; even the more frothier reading i did was relegated to writers i already knew...
